Questionable Wisdom: My Hairstylist Weighs In
Hairstylists are some of my favorite people.
I have a new stylist named Karen, and she is delightful. She's about to take an artistic leap into designing snakeskin purses or something, but I almost hope she doesn't because I want to keep her [yeah, my hair looks amazing — thanks for asking].
We talked about a lot of things while she cut my hair including men, art, weed, martial arts, and my writing career. Luckily for me, Karen is a voracious reader and had some excellent advice for my writing. Here's what she told me:
I've figured out the formula for what kind of books sell. This is what makes money. This is what you should do. Take this and run with it. Here it is. Are you ready? 50 Shades of Grey.
Apparently, she talks to all her clients about 50 Shades of Grey, trying to get to the bottom of why the franchise is so popular. The leading theory among her clientele is that the books are all about trust. And that's why they're popular.
I guess I should write more trust scenes.
